Snow Coach Tour

Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming

January 2020

It was still dark when we entered the park so on the way out we stopped for the obligatory sign photos. We had pretty good weather most of the trip but it did start snowing as we were on our way out.

Old Faithful Geyser

The focus of the trip was our stop at the Old Faithful Geyser Lodge. We got there just in time to see the eruption and then we went to the lodge to eat lunch that was provided as part of the tour.

Yellowstone Buffalo in the Winter

The resident herd of buffalo that winter around the geysers were there and I got a chance to break away from the group and go take some photos.

West Thumb Warming Hut

The snow coach stopped at the warming hut at the West Thumb Geyser area and we had some time to walk around the geysers.

West Thumb Geyser Basin

The upper trail around the West Thumb Geysers was open and we hiked around part of it. The snow was fairly deep around here but elevated boardwalk keep us above the snow. The lower trail goes all the way down to Yellowstone Lake.

Yellowstone Winter Road

The groomed, snow packed road from Flag Ranch heading into Yellowstone Park. This road is closed to the public in winter and only the tracked and big tire snow coaches are allowed into the park. In many places, the tops of the sign were barely visible which meant we were driving on top 5-6 feet of packed snow.

Jackson Elk Refuge

The bachelor herd of young male elk were sitting around close enough to the highway to get a few photos.

Jackson Elk Refuge Big Horn Sheep

Sunday morning we drove up the Elk preserve road just north of Jackson and spotted a herd of big horn sheep sitting on top of the cliffs.
